Zoom shows you as Away: how to stay Available
You are reading a long document, listening to a call on your phone, or working on a second computer. Zoom Workplace sits open on your Mac, and your chat status quietly turns to Away. A colleague messages you, sees the Away icon and assumes you are gone.
This is a false Away: you are working, just not touching the machine that runs Zoom. Unlike some other chat apps, Zoom gives you a built-in setting that helps. Here is how it works, and what to do when that setting is not enough.
How Zoom decides you are Away
Zoom's help article on presence lists the statuses you can pick on the desktop app: Available, Busy, Do not disturb, Away and Out of office. It also describes the automatic case: you are signed in to the desktop app, "but their device is inactive" (Zoom Support: Setting your presence status).
That article does not give a number of minutes. The number comes from a setting, covered next. The key point is that Zoom reads whether your device is inactive. It cannot tell whether you are thinking, reading or on the phone.
Manual statuses also expire in their own ways. According to the same article:
- Busy "clears automatically after 24 hours, if not manually reset."
- Away "clears automatically when becoming active on desktop or mobile," so a status you set by hand only lasts until you next use Zoom.
- Do not disturb lets you choose a preset duration, from 20 minutes up to 24 hours.
The free fix: change Zoom's inactivity timeout
Zoom's settings article describes a toggle in the desktop app, on the General tab, labelled "Change status to 'Away' when inactive for". Zoom says: "Enable the toggle to set inactivity timeout (2-60 minutes)" (Zoom Support: Changing settings in the Zoom Workplace desktop and mobile app).
So the quickest honest fix is to open Zoom, go to your settings, find that option and either raise the timeout (up to 60 minutes) or switch it off. Some points to know:
- Menu names move. Zoom changes its interface between versions, and the setting has been described in different tabs over time. Search the settings window for "inactive" if you cannot see it.
- Your admin may control it. The same article notes that settings "may vary based on your permissions and product access" and that "your admin may have disabled certain features for all users." If the toggle is missing or greyed out, your organisation may have set it for you.
- The default is not stated. Zoom's article does not give a default value, and we could not find an official figure, so check what your own app currently shows rather than relying on a number from a blog.
For many people this is the end of the story. If your problem is only that Zoom switches to Away after a short idle spell, raising the timeout costs nothing.
When the setting is not enough
The timeout fixes Zoom, but you may use more than Zoom. Teams and Slack have their own fixed rules and no equivalent slider. You may also hit problems that no Zoom setting touches: the screen locking or the Mac sleeping.
Screen lock and sleep
If your display turns off and the Mac locks, you are not at the machine as far as any chat app is concerned. On a Mac, three settings in System Settings > Lock Screen control this: how long the Mac can be inactive on battery before the display turns off, the same on a power adapter, and how long after that a password is required (Apple Support: Change Lock Screen settings on Mac).
Lengthening these is free and built in. Check your company policy first, because many managed laptops enforce a lock timeout for good security reasons.
Set a status that says what you are doing
If you are heads-down, Do not disturb with a duration (20 minutes to 24 hours, per Zoom) tells colleagues more than a green dot does. It is honest and free. It will not show you as Available, but often Available is not what you actually want to say.
Keep-awake apps (free, but only half a fix)
Amphetamine, Caffeine, KeepingYouAwake and the built-in caffeinate command stop the Mac from sleeping and the display from turning off. That helps with the screen lock case. It does not stop the idle counter from growing, so an inactivity timeout can still fire. We explain the difference in Amphetamine and Caffeine will not keep Teams or Slack active.
Mouse jigglers
Free cursor-moving apps and USB dongles generate input, so they do reset the idle timer. The trade-offs: the pointer drifts on screen, which is awkward when you share your screen, and most run all day with no idea of your work hours. Some workplaces ban them outright. See Are mouse jigglers detectable? An honest answer before you try one.
A smarter idle-timer reset (Stay Green)
Full disclosure: this is our app. Stay Green is a small Mac menu-bar app that resets the system idle timer only once you have actually gone idle. It uses one harmless keypress (F20 by default, a key Mac keyboards do not have) plus a zero-distance mouse move, so your cursor never moves. Because chat apps read the same system idle information, one tool covers Zoom, Teams, Slack and Discord at once. It pauses itself outside work hours by default (adjustable) and can pause over lunch, and nothing about your activity leaves your Mac.
It has a 14-day free trial with no card needed, then EUR 1.99 a month, EUR 12.99 a year or EUR 29 once for lifetime (pricing). For the Teams side of the story, see Keep Microsoft Teams green on Mac.
Which fix should you pick?
- Only Zoom is the problem: raise or disable the inactivity timeout in Zoom's settings.
- You want people to know you are focused: set Do not disturb with a duration.
- The Mac locks while you read or take calls: lengthen the lock timers, if your company allows it.
- You also need Teams, Slack or Discord to stay green: you need something that resets the system idle timer, such as a jiggler or an idle-aware tool.
Whatever you choose, check your workplace policy. Some employers have rules about activity simulation, and the honest way to use any of these tools is to cover genuine work time.
FAQ
Why does Zoom show me as Away when I am working?
Zoom sets Away when your device looks inactive, and it has no way to see reading, thinking or phone calls (Zoom Support).
Can I change how long Zoom waits before Away?
Yes, in the desktop app. Zoom documents an inactivity timeout you can set between 2 and 60 minutes, or turn off (Zoom Support). Your admin may restrict it.
If I set myself to Away by hand, how long does it last?
Zoom says Away clears automatically when you become active on desktop or mobile (Zoom Support).
Does a keep-awake app stop Zoom going Away?
Not reliably. Keep-awake apps prevent sleep and display-off, but they do not generate input, so an inactivity timeout can still fire.
Does the same thing happen in Slack and Teams?
Yes, with different rules. Slack uses a 10 minute window, covered in Slack shows you inactive after 10 minutes, and Teams has its own, covered in Why does Teams say I'm Away when I'm working?.
